Jhett Tolentino (born December 28, 1976) is a Filipino film and theatre producer. He is known for being the second Philippine-born awardee of the Tony Award, behind Lea Salonga. Having won three Tony Awards for his producing work between 2013 and 2015 and received his first Grammy Award in February 2017, he holds the record for the most wins of any naturalized Filipinos.[1][2][3][4]
In 2018, Tolentino was honored the Pamana ng Pilipino Award by the President of the Philippines for his non-profit work.[5]
Early life
[edit]According to his self-produced biographical documentary Life Is What You Make It, Tolentino is the youngest child of Gloria Dizon, a native of Prieto Diaz, Sorsogon and Arthur Tolentino, a native of Iloilo whose roots come from Bataan. For Tolentino, producing is always a group effort. Everyone involved in staging a show contributes to its success.
His very first project was a theatrical adaptation of Chaim Potok’s 1972 Künstlerroman novel My Name is Asher Lev. “I chose to be part of the team because the material was so powerful,” he says. “It was about fighting and accepting who you are even if it goes against your beliefs.” The play won the Best New Off- Broadway Play Award from the Outer Critics Circle in 2013, beating 400 other productions. The rest, as the adage goes, is history.
For all his success, however, Tolentino admits that he still faces numerous challenges. Getting funding for mounting productions continues to be one of them, and here, he notes that his race and his relatively junior status in the industry are counted against him.
“As a young producer of colour, my experience is that most investors would rather go with producers they are comfortable with,” he says. “[But] I operate on my credibility. Knowing my background, that’s all I have. I travel a lot to network and introduce the investment opportunities to whomever is interested. No matter how tough, I just think of how much it
