    Born in 1946 in Queens, New York, Mapplethorpe lived and worked in New York until his AIDS related death in 1989.  He studied art in Brooklyn but dropped out before graduating.  In 1967 he began a physical and artistic relationship with the musician Patti Smith.  At that time both were trying to make it as artists and it was a while before either tried the medium for which they would become famous.
