What is the significance of Washington Irving’s combined biography and historical epic Mahomet and His Successors (1849-)? Today it is very easy to look at this book and see only the hackwork. Irving himself offers little to cloud the impression of a celebrity author who is writing “pop” history or rewriting far more deserving works of Orientalist scholarship for a general, commercial readership. He admits of the Prophet Muhammad that “no new fact can be added to those already known concerning him” and that his own biography is merely currying other historians’ books into “an easy, perspicuous and flowing narrative.”
Yet tilt Mahomet and His Successors a little and it suddenly resembles the work of a lifetime. Irving had started busying himself around the Prophet Muhammad in 1827 and in 1831 we find him trying to load an early draft of his biography onto the British publisher John Murray. Nothing then came of Irving’s negotiations and indeed his correspondence with Murray had ended in acrimony. Irving veered away from the Prophet at a tangent, in choosing next to write about Spain’s Alhambra palace (which had been built following the Moorish conquest).
