To set the stage for this unlikely story, in which I hit send before the final outcome is known, Stran was 45th in the world before the September 11-13 Justin Boots Playoffs in Puyallup, Wash. Stran and Jennifer Smith are a couple deeply intertwined in the western world.

In a career spanning 15 years in Pro Rodeo, 2008 World Champion Tie-Down roper, Stran Smith has known his share of hardships losing his best friend and his favorite horse in separate traffic accidents, he endured career threatening injuries to both his knees, pelvis, and shoulder, but made headlines when he suffered a debilitating stroke that required experimental heart surgery. Through the tough times, he qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo 11 times, and became a national pitchman for Wrangler and Ariat. The fans loved Stran, voting him twice as the Coors Fans’ Favorite at the WNFR.

Jennifer Smith, Miss Rodeo Texas 1994 and Miss Rodeo America 1995, enjoyed a 15 year career in the equine television broadcast world, working for networks including ESPN, ESPN 2, CMT, CBS Sports, Outdoor Life Network, and Wrangler Network.
