Mary E. Pearson was born on Aug. 14, 1955, in Southern California. She describes herself as having always been a writer. Even as a child she was extremely imaginative and would become a different “character” each day. Her parents got in the habit of asking her who she was that day every morning, and she would then only respond to the name of that character. This overactive imagination became a bit of a problem, as one time she got lost in the store and employees had to ask for “parents of Little Red Riding Hood”, since they could not get her real name out of her (Pearson).

In her personal bio on her website, she describes her belief that all education matters, not just college, in her journey to becoming a writer. She tells a story of her second grade teacher, who inspired her early on to come up with stories. Later on in high school, she tells of one of her English teachers who encouraged her to pursue writing. However, she later went to Long Beach State University for Art, and worked as an artist. She later became a mother, then an elementary school teacher, before finally becoming a writer. While teaching elementary school, Pearson picked up writing again during her breaks.
